Updated entry requirements - Heard and McDonald Islands
Following a review of the Reserve’s former management plan, the Director of the Australian Antarctic Division has implemented a prohibition on entry to the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
This prohibition was implemented on 13 May 2014 under regulation 12.23 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Regulations 2000. It applies to all persons at all times, except for: officers, servants and agents of the Commonwealth acting in the course of their duties, persons authorised in accordance with subsection 12(2) of the Environment Protection and Management Ordinance 1987 (HIMI), and persons authorised by the Director of National Parks.
Visits to the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands may be undertaken if authorised. Information on how to apply for a permit to enter the Territory can be found online or by emailing the Australian Antarctic Division: HIMI@aad.gov.au.
