Active volcanism at the McDonald Islands over the last decade has had a dramatic influence on the environment, resulting in the coalescing of the previously separate McDonald Island and Flat Island, and affecting local wildlife colonies, vegetation and ecosystems to an as yet unknown extent.

Location and boundaries

The Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) Marine Reserve is located in the southern Indian Ocean, approximately 4,100 kilometres south-west of Perth, Western Australia. 

The Reserve covers an area of approximately 71,200 square kilometres. It includes Heard Island and the McDonald Islands, the surrounding 12 nautical mile territorial sea, plus an extended marine area which extends in parts to the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone boundary.
